What is Accident Forgiveness?

Accident forgiveness is the part of a car insurance policy protecting a driver from the car insurance rating system for an at-fault accident. Most car insurance companies offer it two different ways. The first is as an upgrade or add-on to your policy, where you pay up front for this protection. The other is earned; this is where the driver goes a certain length of time on the policy without having an accident. Verti also offers customers with a prior accident save an average of $537 per year with FreePass® compared to what they could be paying for car insurance.

What is FreePass?

Verti’s FreePass won’t set a higher auto insurance rate for new customers with one at-fault accident with their previous insurer. If you haven’t had an at-fault accident before, you get accident forgiveness for free!* You can also earn a more robust version after you’ve been a customer with Verti for a while. FreePass essentially comes in three different flavors: Current, Future and Earned. Here’s a look at what’s baked into each version of FreePass:

* Subject to eligibility guidelines

With the Current Coverage under the FreePass program, if you have one at-fault accident in the past three years we’ll price your car insurance policy as if that accident never happened. As long as you stay at-fault accident free and stick with Verti for your car insurance, your car insurance will not increase as a result of that original at-fault accident that occurred before you had Verti for your car insurance.

If you haven’t had an at-fault accident in the past three years…first of all congratulations! You should be rewarded for your good driving behavior. For drivers with no at-fault accidents in the past three years you get FreePass Future Coverage for free with your policy. You also can take advantage of our Clean in Three Year Discount or Clean in Five Year Discount if you qualify. If you do happen to have an at-fault accident, Future FreePass will make sure that as long as you remain with Verti, we won’t increase your car insurance policy rates as a result of that one at-fault accident at the start of the policy. If a second at-fault accident occurs, both accidents are chargeable.

Once you’ve been a customer of Verti for 36 months or three years, the perks really begin with Earned Coverage under the FreePass Program. This means that if you have an at-fault accident while covered by your Verti car insurance policy, not only are you not charged for the accident, but you also get to retain any Clean for Three Year or Clean for Five Year Discounts you may have qualified for.

Accident Forgiveness FAQs

Still have questions? Well, we have answers! Check out some of the frequently asked questions and scenarios below and see if one of these answer your question. If not you can always contact us and we can chat.

If I come in with one at-fault accident in the last three years, do I qualify?

If you meet eligibility guidelines, absolutely! You’d qualify for FreePass Current Accident Forgiveness.

What if I have one at-fault accident and my spouse also has one at-fault accident, could we take advantage of FreePass?

With Verti’s FreePass, we only forgive one at-fault accident per policy.

If I have one prior at-fault accident and I qualify for the Current FreePass Program, if I keep Verti as my car insurance for three years, do I qualify for Earned Accident Forgiveness?

Yes you do as long as you are at-fault accident free for those three years! Best of all you could also qualify for additional discounts such as our Clean Driver Discount, so you could save even more!

What if I become a customer have no at-fault accidents on my driving record and then have an at-fault accident?

You would move from Future FreePass Program to the Current Accident Forgiveness. As long as you don’t have another at-fault accident and remain with Verti for your car insurance, you won’t be charged for that accident.

If I don’t have any at-fault accidents in the last 3 years and I become a Verti customer, can I take advantage of FreePass?

If you meet eligibility guidelines, yes you would get Future FreePass Accident Forgiveness. So if you get into an at-fault car accident while a Verti Customer, you wouldn’t be charged for that at-fault accident on your Verti car insurance policy.

What if I become a customer and then have an at-fault accident, will I ever qualify for Earned Accident Forgiveness?

Yes Earned is qualified for after 36 consecutive months on a Verti car insurance policy without an incident.

If I become a customer with one prior at-fault accident and have another accident while a customer, what happens?

Unfortunately, you would lose Current Accident Forgiveness and your renewal rate would reflect having two at-fault accidents. At Verti we assume people will learn from their first mistake and become more careful drivers so only the first at-fault accident is forgiven at the start of the policy. If a second at-fault accident occurs, both accidents are chargeable.

What if I am at-fault accident free for 3 years with Verti as my car insurance and qualify for Earned Accident Forgiveness, then have an at-fault accident. What happens if I have a second at-fault accident?

Your first at-fault accident would be waived, but your second at-fault accident would be charged. You would also lose any Clean Driver Discounts you may have qualified for.

I’ve never had a car accident so I would qualify for the Future FreePass Program. If I have Verti for my car insurance for three years, am still accident free and qualify for Earned Accident Forgiveness, could I have two at-fault accidents?

No Future Accident Forgiveness would fall off once you qualify for Earned Accident Forgiveness. Verti’s Earned Program is more valuable because if a single accident occurs while covered, not only are you not charged for that at-fault accident, but you will keep any Clean Driver Discounts you may have earned. If you have a 2nd at-fault accident, you’d only be charged for the second at-fault accident but, unfortunately, you’ll lose your Clean Driver Discounts.

If I have no prior at-fault accidents and qualify for the FreePass Future Program and then have an at-fault accident during year three on my Verti car insurance policy. Do I retain FreePass Current Accident Forgiveness until after year six?

Yes you’d move from Future FreePass Program to Current Accident Forgiveness. If you then remain at-fault accident free for another 36 more consecutive months while a Verti customer you’d qualify for Earned Coverage.

I have Verti for my car insurance and have FreePass Future Accident Forgiveness because I have no prior at-fault accidents. I’m getting married and my future spouse has one at-fault accident, can I use it for their accident?

Yes, if you add your spouse to your policy, your policy would move from FreePass Future Program to Current Accident Forgiveness and the at-fault accident would be forgiven. If you had any Clean Driver Discounts, you would lose them though.
